Since her sun is now heading for the western horizon, Barbara Blanks says she’s blooming as fast as she can. She's currently the Recording Secretary of the Poetry Society of Texas (PST), as well as its Librarian. Barbara has written two books (one memoir/inspirational, one humorous poetry); and writes on assignment for RubberStampMadness, a national magazine; and has won/placed/showed in a variety of poetry and prose contests. She's also the Editor of A Galaxy of Verse.
(Please see this web site for membership and contest information.)
In November, 2010, Barb published Giant Steps, a young adult novel written by her mom, Mary Winklebleck, who died on June 30, 2010, before her book could go into print. Barb worked with her mom on revisions and editing, and it became a collaborative story. It is now available directly from Barb, from lulu.com, or from amazon.com.
Barbara is also the Recording Secretary/Treasurer of the Bea Land-Phoenix Chapter of the PST, a member of the Brown Bag Poets. She also belongs to several non-Texas state poetry societies just so she can see what other poets are up to.
Her PST first place poems and a book review/profile about her were featured in the May/June 2009 issue of The Senior Voice. http://www.theseniorvoice.com/pdffiles/0956SV.pdf
Because of that article, she met Carol Butler, the owner/publisher, who asked her to write on assignment for the Senior Voice. You can check for current and past articles by Barbara at http://www.theseniorvoice.com/drupal/drupal-6.15/
However, because of changes at the paper, she is not currently writing for it.
As a result of that profile, she was asked to speak at The Point, Center for Arts & Education, at CC Young in Dallas. Some of those events led her to being nominated and elected as a Director on the Board of the Poetry Society of Texas. She was also asked to step in as Librarian after the post was vacated.
On the basis of three humorous filler pieces sent to RubberStampMadness, a national stamping magazine she’d been subscribing to for twenty years, Barb was offered assignment work. Her first article appeared in their Fall 2009 issue, and she has had at least one piece in every issue since then.
Barb's story, "A Bird Too Bizarre," appeared in the July 2009, 7th Anniversary issue of Beyond Centauri, a Sam's Dot publication. "Cobs and Lobbers" is in the July 2010 issue. www.samsdotpublishing.com/. The non-fiction, "The Whole Nine Yards"--about the mystical magical number 9--was published in the July/August 2011 issue of Fun for Kidz.
So, as you can see, one thing builds on another. Barb says, “When Serendipity slaps you in the face, start chewing!”
